Camping grounds in Nelson and Tasman are the fullest they’ve been for a few years, say camping ground managers, with thousands of campers from around the world zoning in on the Top of the South for summer. Tahuna Beach Holiday Park will host around 2500 people over the New Year period and other camping grounds say they’re full. One of the most popular spots for holiday makers in our region is Kaiteriteri Beach. Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve manager, Rob Guild, says the camp is fully booked from Christmas right through to Waitangi Day with a capacity of 1800 people. “The wet weather forecast hasn’t hampered bookings at all and I am surprised at how many people are here and already set up. It is building up to be a good season,” says Rob. Tahunanui Beach Holiday Park has been running for around 80 years and is the biggest camp in the Southern Hemisphere. It hosts around 2500 people over the Christmas/New Year peri-

Bookings this year are up compared to last year’s figures which may be attributed to Christchurch slowly getting back on track. In addition to domestic tourism, they’ve also received strong bookings from international tourists, quite unusual as they tend to arrive late January. The cheapest options for campers in our region is the Maitai Valley Motor Camp, at $8 a person per night. The camp was previously known as a hot spot for teenagers to party over the New Year period, however last year, a new “No New

Carol Wood, the camp manager, says bookings are looking strong over the summer season. The Mapua Leisure Park, another long-standing camping ground in our region, has similar numbers of campers to last year. Manager June Dunn says they have received more demand for powered sites this year and these, along with the accommodation, are now fully booked for the period, and tent sites are filling up fast.

Outdoor movies back for summer If you’re looking for an excuse to get out of the house these summer holiday evenings, Nelson’s Summer Movies al Fresco is the perfect opportunity. There you can enjoy a picnic atmosphere in some of Nelson’s most beautiful parks and venues, and watch a selection of Hollywood’s classic movies. “Summer Movies al Fresco has been presented by the Nelson City Council, with assistance from Tasman District Council, since about 1997,” says NCC Summer Festival team leader, Axel de Maupeou. “An average of 4000 to 5000 people attend the 18 outdoor movie screenings held in

scenic parks and reserves across the region.” This year’s movie gems include everyone’s favourite nanny, Mary Poppins, the movie adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women, Marlon Brando’s A Street Car Named Desire, the pirate film Captain Blood and last, but not least, the subtitled French action tale of Tintin and the Golden Fleece. Although many of the screenings are happening at Isel Park and Fairfield House, there are still chances to view your favourite classic films in outdoor cinemas all around the region, including Richmond’s

Local ladies enjoying Summer Movies al Fresco 2013, at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond last summer. Washbourn Gardens, Jester House in Tasman, Lake Rotoiti, Motueka’s T.O.A.D Hall, the Takaka Village Green and Mou-

Movies will be cancelled if it’s raining so, if you’re unsure, see the Summer in Nelson Facebook page or text “Is it on?’” to 021 776 623 after 7:30pm on the night. Adult’s entry is $2 while children are only $1. The first movie is on Tuesday, January 6, at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, where Mary Poppins will be played. For a full list of movies, dates and venues, see www.nelson.govt.nz and search "outdoor movies".

A message from Tasman mayor I wish the very best of Christmas cheer to all Waimea Weekly readers. We have certainly been enjoying a great run of “sunny Nelson” weather and I am looking forward to this continuing into our summer, with thousands from outside our district joining those of us already enjoying the beauty of our district with apparent full booking for many of our accommodation providers. Whether it is the majesty of Rabbit Island, our many rivers, Harwood’s Hole, the dancing sands of Te Waikoropupu Springs, wild and windy Wharariki Beach, Tasman mayor Richard Farewell Spit, the golden Kempthorne. sands of Abel Tasman National Park, or the alpine experience at Nelson Lakes, the variety is endless and we are only scratching the surface of what is on offer. As a keen mountain biker I will certainly be taking in the opportunities the Tasman Great Taste Trail has to offer. The recent opening of the section of the trail from Motueka to Kaiteriteri adds to the trails and bridges from Richmond to Kaiteriteri and Richmond to Wakefield enabling safe cycling on this iconic cycleway. After a day of enjoying the wonders nature has provided, there are many dining opportunities and any number of festivals and events happening over this period for all the family and friends. We live in one of the best places in the world. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it with your family and friends and that you are able to enjoy the best of this summer season.

Spoilt for swimming choice in Nelson

Swimmers make the most of the fresh water in the Roding River in Aniseed Valley.

The Nelson-Tasman region is wellknown for its amazing beaches. And it’s little wonder because Tahunanui, Rabbit Island, Kaiteriteri and the countless golden-sanded bays in Abel Tasman National Park are some of the best in the country. But what many people don’t realise is that there are also some magnificent swimming holes in our region’s rivers. So, if you are tired of cleaning up all that sand that the kids keep dragging into the car, or want to escape that annoying sea breeze, then head inland to the rivers you won’t be disappointed. The most popular river swimming holes are found in the Maitai and Roding rivers, and not just because they are close to Nelson and Richmond. These rivers also have an abundance of easily accessible swimming holes, often adjacent to picnic areas with plenty of facilities, that are safe and clean. They are also relatively warm, with temperatures ranging from 18 and 20 degrees Celsius over the summer, and clear. Girlies, Black, Denne’s and Sunday Holes on the Maitai River all provide an idyllic setting for picnicking and river swimming, just min-

utes from Nelson city, while the popular Twin Bridges and Busch reserves on the banks of the Roding River in the Aniseed Valley are close to both Richmond and Brightwater. The Lee River, which has a giantsized swimming hole at the Lee Reserve, is also handy and is the third most popular river in the region, followed by the Takaka River at Paynes Ford, Motupiko River at Quinneys Bush and Marahau River at Old McDonald’s Farm. The Anatoki River at One Spec Road, Lake Rotoiti at Kerr Bay and the Buller River at Riverview Campground were also in the top 10 in a Tasman District Council survey of freshwater swimming sites conducted in 2010-2011. However, the survey showed that these sites can get crowded with up to 2000 swimmers a day visiting the Roding River over the summer holiday period. So, if you want some peace and solitude, be prepared to travel either to the smaller, less accessible swimming holes further upstream in these rivers, or to remote gems like Cleopatra’s Pool, nestled between Torrent Bay and Anchorage in the famous Abel Tasman National Park.

Queen St Pharmacy win window competition The Richmond Unlimited Decorate 2 Win competition was judged last week with many wintery white Christmas-themed entries this year. The competition was open to all businesses in the CBD and Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint, says it was hard to choose a winner with so many wonderful displays. First prize of $1000 worth of advertising with either the Waimea Weekly or Nelson Weekly plus $500 cash, was won by Queen Street Pharmacy with their mix of a white Christmas and more traditional green and

red-themed display. Second prize of $500 cash went to The Hospice Shop and third prize of $250 cash was given to McGlashen Pharmacy. Sue Morris, owner of Queen Street Pharmacy, says their winning display was a joint effort by all staff. “Our staff has really embraced the holiday season by dressing the shop and themselves up in Christmas theme. We are going to spend the winnings on a breakfast for all staff on Christmas Eve in readiness for one of our busiest days of the year,” says Sue.

Police report Steve Greally

As the rest of the community prepares for Christmas and holidays, here at Police we are gearing up for the likelihood of an increased workload. At this time of year we traditionally get a significant increase in the number of calls to family violence incidents. This increase can be the result of a range of issues such as finances, alcohol consumption and other family pressures. Over the course of a year, approximately 8.4 per cent of Nelson Police resources are used dealing with family violence. The message we need people to take is that family violence in any form is not acceptable and we can’t turn a blind eye. The unfortunate fact is that it is probably occurring in a household in your neighbourhood regardless of where you live. In recent years we have seen an increase in the number of incidents reported to police, however we know that a lot of family violence still goes unreported. That’s where friends, family and neighbours can help. If you know someone who is offending against their family members you need to say something. Doing so could save a life. I often hear people’s surprise that a victim of family violence chooses not to leave their abusive partner. The reality for that person is that often the violence is intermittent or alcohol-related, and the majority of the time the perpetrator is a pleasant person. The victim often doesn’t want to see the offender locked up - they want to see them change their behaviour so they can all live happily ever after. That can be an achievable goal if the right agencies are brought in to support the family and the people involved want to make changes. The best gift you might be able to give a friend this Christmas is to challenge the way they treat their wife/husband/partner or children and encourage them to get help. Remember, if you want to remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Wineries a perfect place to visit Nelson has around twenty five boutique wineries and vineyard cafes, located in the hills and plains of the region. Many of the internationallyacclaimed and award-winning wineries offer tastings accompanied by fresh, locally-produced food. We are renowned, firstly, for our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but the region also has a great reputation for aromatic varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. Viticulturalists are stamping a mark on the world stage with Nelson positioning itself as the new speciality wine centre of New Zealand. Some of the more well-known wineries located in our region include, Brightwater Vineyards, Neudorf Vineyard, Seifried Estate, Waimea Estates and Woollaston at Mahana, however there are many boutique vineyards to visit also. The cafe itself is nestled within a beautiful garden setting. The menu features simple, fresh produce that is either grown on the property or sourced locally. Salads feature heavily with all condiments and dressings made on site using their own macadamia nuts and fruit. All desserts are also made in-house and there are plenty of gluten-free options available. Fossil Ridge Boutique Vineyard is open from 11am to 4.30pm Wednesday to Sunday, it is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and public holidays. For further information please phone 544 9463.

Summer 2015 Tim Parker of Nelson jazz band Out on Bail performs at the Jazz Festival held at Washbourn Gardens last year.

Message from Nelson Fire Service Each summer, Nelson sees an influx of holiday makers arrive to enjoy our lovely climate, beautiful beaches, enjoy the hospitality etc. To ensure that holiday makers enjoy their time, here are a few fire safety housekeeping tips for families. Ensure that while you are cooking you are always looking, this means don’t leave cooking unattended. If you are going to enjoy a few refreshments over the summer, consider getting takeaways if you are feeling hungry in the early hours of the morning. For people Des Irving, camping, (either caravans or assistant area tents), ensure that your LPG commander, connections are securely Tasmanfitted and tested for leaks Marlborough. with a soap/water solution, and that naked flames are kept well away from tents, etc. Ensure that you turn off all cooking, heating and lighting appliances. Have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket near the exit and make sure you know how to use it. Caravans should be fitted with a photoelectric smoke alarm that is tested regularly. Velcro the alarm to the ceiling so it can be removed when cooking. Monitor fuel levels so that you don’t overfill. Don’t carry any spare fuel unless essential. When storing gas cylinders. Ensure they are either secure on deck away from hatches so any escaping gas disperses, or placed in a properly designed and ventilated container above the water line.

Fifty shows planned for Jazz and Blues fest

The Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival features an exciting line-up of local talent, plus national and international artists playing over 50 scheduled events in various locations across Nelson. The festival centres around a number of free outdoor concerts and a performance programme which runs from January 1 to January 4. Festival organiser Frances McElhinney says, “this year’s programme is diverse and includes local bands, ex-pat Kiwis home for Christmas, as well as some big international names”. A highlight of the festival will be the Divas Round Midnight concert held

at Old St John’s Church in Nelson. The Divas, Susan de Jong, Jennine Bailey and Tessa Quayle are usually solo artists, but will perform together with their swinging band for this festival. James Tait-Jamieson has returned from performing his show Sons of Sinatra in Las Vegas and has a seven-piece group with a fat big-band sound. The high energy musical tribute to jazz singers, ranging from modern artists to the one and only Frank Sinatra, will also be playing at Old St John’s Church and not one to miss. The festival launches with the Nelson Jazz & Blues in the Park at Fairfield

Park in Nelson, and is followed by Jazz in the Park concerts at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond. Families can enjoy a picnic while listening to musicians and entertainers from mid-afternoon through to early evening. Cost is a $5 donation. Free public performances will also be held on the 1903 site stage, Trafalgar St, just by the Cathedral steps, at midday on January 1 through to January 4. Tahunanui Beach will no doubt be a popular spot with visitors and locals this summer, and while it is a relatively low risk beach, the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club will still be out on patrol, making sure everyone stays safe and enjoys their holidays. The club will have 42 lifeguards operating over the summer period, all trained and prepared to deal with situations from water rescues to minor first aid. Lifeguard Ed Steenbergen says the main danger is the channel where the Waimea Estuary drains out into Tasman Bay, but most of the situations they deal with include patching up cut feet from shells and locating lost children who have made their way to the playground. The Nelson Life Saving Club have already begun

their patrols and will have their flags out in the middle of Tahuna Beach every Sunday between now and the end of March. They will also be out on Saturdays over the holiday period and most public holidays, although the time they are on patrol will vary. “It only takes 5cm of water to drown in,” says Ed, so if swimmers do find themselves in trouble, they should use the universal distress signal of waving their hands in the air so that they can be seen by the lifeguards. Ed’s last words of advice to swimmers is to always swim with a buddy, let someone know you’ve gone swimming so they can expect you out of the water, and of course, stay safe in the sun and enjoy the beautiful Tahunanui Beach.

Plenty of shopping options in our region A PANDEMONIUM OF

PARROTS

Nelson-Tasman shopping offers many options, with a large selection of national chain stores and many boutiquestyle shops and designer fashions, plus locally-made arts and crafts. There is something for everyone from hunting and fishing, locally-handcrafted garments and jewellery, books and electronics, clothing, children’s toys, sports, department stores, giftware and furniture. You will find smaller independent boutiques in Nelson City and local fashion designers that create and sell their own work direct to the public. “Nelson is a vibrant place to be during the holiday season, with music and entertainment such as the Nelson Jazz Festival and Street Beat playing around the streets,” says Cathy Madigan, Manager of Uniquely Nelson. In the Tasman region, Richmond Mall offers the largest shopping experience under one roof in the Top of the South Island, covering 22,000 square metres

I am very excited about a new organic tea that ‘Artemis’ have just released called ‘Slim and Trim Tea’. The herbs in this tea have been carefully selected based on clinical research to support increased metabolism, to help regulate blood sugar levels and cravings, and to aid digestion and detoxification.

Wow, 2015, I must be showing my age as I remember, when young, watching those way-in-the-futuristic movies that were all based in 2020, well that's not that far out to believe now. One thing that has improved dramatically over the last 10 years is the specific fishing gear one can purchase now. From dedicated rods and reels for targeting certain species, to the huge array of artificial lures and baits available. Once you're "hooked" on fishing you will need at least one set for all of these and truckloads of lures and accessories. Not to mention all the amazing electronics that you can get now if you’re a boat owner. However, at the end of the day, anyone from young to old, experienced to newbie, if you have a fishing line in the water the possibilities are endless. I am not going to touch on all the types of fishing that are current for this time of year as we have covered this fortnightly, but I would like to particularly mention trolling lures. Trolling is a very relaxing way of spending time on the water whilst having a chance of catching the amazing Yellowtail Kingfish or albacore, or the mighty fighter-for-

weight Kahawai. Get some advice from your local fishing tackle stores, whose advice is "what can't you sell a fisherman?........ Nothing!" Haha. Seriously though, the staff will put you on the right track to get out and give it a go. From the beautiful Tasman Bay to the awesome Marlborough Sounds, we have it all in our reach. The region's premiere fishing competition is coming up in March 2015. The "Tasman Bay Snapper Classic 2015" will be held this year on 7th March. This year, it will be supported by and held from the Speights Alehouse which not only is an amazing venue but will mean that the entries will be unlimited due to venue size. This is a business or club four-person teams event with the heaviest combined four snapper per team taking out the overall prize. Heaviest individual snapper is the next claim to fame. So start organizing your business teams now and lay the challenge out there to other companies to see if they can do better than your team. For more information on this email to tasmanbaysnapperclassic@gmail. com Tight-lines and bent rods to all for 2015.

It may not be everyone's idea of a real motorcycle but Murray Schwass reckons the Phillips Gadabout pedal scooter he will be displaying in the Stoke Memorial Hall on January 3 and 4 is a real classic. Murray's moped will be one of about 85 motorcycles, owned by Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club members, at the club's annual show, which this year has a theme of Mods and Rockers. Scooters were the favourite form of transport for the Mods and, when it comes to scooters, Murray says the 50cc Gadabout is definitely a classic. "It's one of those bikes that so many people learned to ride on," Murray says. "It's a classic first-owner's bike - people would buy something like this and then progress to a bigger bike like a Triumph or BSA. Murray says his Gadabout, which remains in original condition, also has some family history, being purchased by his Aunt Dulce from Shuttleworth Cy-

cles in Nelson in 1963. "She got it to commute between Richmond and Hope where she worked. I can remember her riding it out to our place when I was seven or eight - I used to go and pedal start it for her when she left. "She traded it in for a Honda 50 and I found it quite a few years later when I was doing some work on a motorcycle for a guy in Stoke. He said 'I have a couple of pedal scooters you might be interested in' and I recognised it and bought it back." Murray, who restores classic motorcycles and cars professionally, will be taking a second moped, a pink NSU Quickly to the show, as well as a 1967 BSA Thunderbolt to keep the Rockers happy. The show will be held at the Stoke Memorial Hall on Main Road Stoke on Saturday and Sunday, January 3 and 4, from 9am to 4pm. It will also include a swapmeet for all motorcycle-related items on Sunday from 9am to 12pm. Tickets will be sold at the door and cost $5 for adults, with children free.

Shihad headlines a huge summer of live music at Riwaka There nothing quite like watching a live band perform and there’s few better than New Zealand’s own Shihad. The rock group will perform at the Riwaka Hotel on December 30, along with The Datsuns, I am Giant and Cairo Knife Fight. It is one of four big concerts at the Riwaka Hotel this summer and Shihad drummer Tom Larkin says he can’t wait. “One of our things is that we dearly love playing live and we dearly love touring New Zealand. We’ve got an album that we’re really proud of so it all compounds and makes it a pleasurable exercise all round.” The album Tom speaks of is Fvey, which was released earlier this year. He says the band is hugely proud of it. “When you’re around as long as we are you get lazy and complacent, but you also get good and very competent at what you do. So when you’re in that position, what you need is someone to come in and thrash you and that’s exactly what [producer]Jaz Coleman did, he punished us as a band. “It was brutal on a physical level, but that’s what was needed and

that’s why it’s so good. It’s five people reaching for a standard and a state and getting here and it’s captured, that’s why it’s so powerful.” He says the momentum of the album, and its critical success, has been extra motivation for the band as they prepare to tour the country this summer. “F*&$ yeah, I’m excited. We love playing live.” Concerts at Riwaka Hotel this Shihad are performing at the Riwaka Hotel this month, with their set including several songs for their hit album Fvey that was released this year. summer: Devilskin are playing on December 27. been coming to the camp for three or four generations - it's a very family-friendly place." Rob says the camp, which has 400 power sites and 17 cabins, is fully occupied from late December to the end of January, with numbers peaking at around 2000 at New Year. And during that time there are plenty of things to do in addition to the daily boating, fishing, swimming and walking. The holiday activities start with a beach volleyball tournament on December 28 and continue with the Miss Kaiteriteri contest on January 2, the One Shot Golf competition on January 1 and 2, and water ski racing on

Cycling is also becoming increasingly popular, with the Tasman Great Taste Trail being extended to Kaiteriteri earlier this year and the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park attracting more adventurous riders. The fact that Kaiteriteri is also one of the gateways to the Nelson region's biggest tourist attraction, Abel Tasman National Park, adds to its popularity. It is the starting point for many of the kayak and boat cruise operators that tour the Abel Tasman coastline, and is a favourite base for campers and backpackers exploring the park.

Kaiteriteri is one of the region's most popular summer holiday destinations, with up to 2000 people staying at the famous Kaiteriteri Beach Motorcamp and thousands more coming from around the Nelson region for day trips. Although the main attractions are Kaiteriteri’s golden-sanded beach, excellent camping facilities and a long list of outdoor activities, camp manager Rob Guild says the biggest asset is its family-friendly atmosphere. "The camp is a very safe place and we have a safe beach, that's why people keep coming back," Rob says. "We have families who have

of luck will give them the edge this year. With so many talented drivers stepping up to compete in the New Zealand Stockcar Championships, it’s hard to pick out one, or even two, of Nelson’s contenders that could be destined for the podium, all any of them can hope for is to stay out of trouble and keep their eyes on the prize. The championship event will also showcase a collection of vintage stockcars from the North Island that will be taking part in a friendly race. Those who are familiar with the world of speedway’s stockcars are sure to be there on the day to take in the action and cheer on their drivers, while those who haven’t witnessed the magic of stockcars can look forward to the carnage that has made New Zealand speedway so popular. Tickets to the event are available from the Richmond Mall or can be bought at the gate. If you’re looking for a thrill these holidays, speedway

The New Zealand Stockcar Championships is the biggest championship in the stockcar class and drivers will be using their weekly club races wisely in preparation for Friday, January 9, when the qualifying races will be held, and Saturday, January 10, when 30 drivers will go head-tohead in the finals in order to take out the top spot. Every year, clubs meet at a New Zealand Speedway conference in order to win the rights to hold the championship competition, with the date being decided by the successful host. To date, no South Island club has managed to win the championship tournament, or even make it near the top three, so Nelson competitors will have their fingers crossed that their training and a certain degree

Cycle trail proving to be a huge attraction Last summer, the Tasman Great Taste Trail was one of the region's biggest holiday attractions, and now that the popular cycle trail has been extended to Kaiteriteri it is likely to encourage even more riders to get on their bikes this Christmas and New Year. The Great Taste Trail, which is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trails project, reached Mapua via Rabbit Island and the Mapua Ferry in time for last Christmas. The latest stage from Motueka to Kaiteriteri was officially opened in October this year. New Zealand Cycle

Trail's project manager, Jonathan Kennett, says that's likely to result in a big increase in riders. Although there are still 67 kilometres of the trail to be completed, Jonathan says linking the trail to two key tourism destinations, Kaiteriteri and Abel Tasman National Park, will prove to be a key step. Up to 5739 riders a month were counted on sections of the trail last summer, but Jonathan says the Kaiteriteri link will open up so many opportunities for holiday makers.
